Being a new player my self i followed the Oolite's website instructions in Getting Started with Oolite.(http://www.oolite.org/starting/) but it misses a couple of details that can make your game easier.
In a nutshell:

  • We start in a station near planet Lava
  • We purchase agriculture goods with a plan to sell them in an industrial system where there will be higher demand in order to make a profit.
  • From the Galaxy map we set as target planet Leesti
  • We launch
  • We approach Leesti not directly to avoid traffic that could masslock us and thougth us out of torus-drive speed.
  • After we see the station we approach it's boyo.
  • We turn toward the station and midtrip we initiate our ID system and then ask for permission.
  • We land carefully!!
