What is CentOS? | Fedora Podcast 059

A couple of episodes ago we talked to Carl George about EPEL, and half that conversation ended up being about a neighboring project: CentOS. The questions kept coming, so we made a whole episode out of it. Amy Marrich chairs the CentOS Board. Troy Dawson leads the CentOS Stream team and builds Stream for RISC-V in the ISA and Alternative Images SIGs. Shaun McCance is the CentOS Community Architect, and as of a couple of weeks ago the Fedora Community Architect too. Together with Noah, this is the biggest panel we have ever had on the show, and we use it to answer one deceptively simple question: what is CentOS in 2026? We cover why CentOS Linux and CentOS Stream are not the same thing, how the Fedora to ELN to Stream to RHEL pipeline actually works, why Stream and RHEL now build from the same commit, how the project is governed, and how to get involved without writing a line of code.
